Mongolia

We learned about traking animals with radio neck collars and backpacks we played a fun game that thought us how they are used on vultures in mongolia. At lunch we saw pictures from camera traps we set up around the zoo. We saw many cool birds and mongolian animals while touring the zoo and later we got to touch a hedgehog.

Botswana

Today we learned about predator conservation in botswana. Bodie the wonder dog visited our classroom to teach us about a cool guard dog program being used. We made our own scents to mark our territory like an african painted dog would. On tour we saw cool predators and even a baby leopard. Also a guest speaker came and talked about what it is like to live in Kenya and the zebra consevation being done there.

Keeping Cool June 27th

Today we learned all about the awesome animals that live in North America. We saw the Polar Bears and even got to have a talk with their keeper. In the afternoon we got to be arctic researchers and practiced tranqulizing, drawing blood and collecting poop samples on fake polar bears. We learned a lot and had fun meeting new friends and interacting with the animals.

Keeping Cool!- June 27th

Hey Summer Safari,

Thanks for letting me talk to you about Bodie and how man's best friend are helping to minimize the conflict between humans and predators in Botswana.  Hope you are able to stay cool in this weather this week.

African Wild Dogs

June 5th- Today was a great experience!  I got to see a wild dog training!  I also got to do the "Smell is for the Dogs" activity.  We also had a great tour!  I had a blast at camp today!

Being in the field

June 4th-  I liked it when I "drew blood" from a model polar bear today!  Its great to learn what it would be like out in the field. I also had a team that worked together and helped one another.

Polar Bear Research!

June 4th- I enjoyed studying the polar bears with my research teacm today.  I learned how to work together as a team and I learned a lot about what its like to take DNA from a polar bear, "tranquilize" it, measure it and record the data.  It was cool to really work with polar bear models and not just learn about them.

Welcome to Camp!

Welcome Summer Safari Campers!  Denver Zoo is looking forward to seeing what cool things you are learning about in camp and then sharing them with the community on this blog!  Good luck and have a great week!

Denver Zoo Camera Traps

As a part of the theme of the Wild About Conservation summer camp, we thought it would be fun to install camera traps in zoo exhibits to capture some cool images of our zoo animals. Throughout the week, campers will be checking in on the footage the cameras captured. We can't wait to see what our furry and feathered family members are up to when we aren't watching! Enjoy!
